Concord, NC Insulation From Historic Union Street to New Subdivisions
Attic insulation, air sealing, wall and floor insulation, and crawl space encapsulation for Cabarrus County homes of every age.
Serving Concord homeowners from a company founded in 1945
Standard Insulating Company provides attic insulation, air sealing, wall and floor insulation, and crawl space insulation and encapsulation for Concord homes.
Concord has some of the oldest homes we work on and some of the newest. A century-old house on North Union Street and a 2010s two-story need very different plans, so every job starts with a measured inspection, not a template.
Our Process for Concord Homes, Old and New
Older homes need patience and newer homes need precision. Either way, the order of work stays the same: understand the house, seal it, insulate it, and check it.
Measure Before We Recommend
We record insulation depth, look for air leaks and moisture, and note the age and framing of the house before suggesting anything.
Care Around Original Finishes
Plaster ceilings, old trim, and narrow attic openings are common in Concord’s historic districts. We plan access to protect them.
Closing the Gaps
Balloon framing, chimney chases, and old wiring runs can leave open paths into the attic. We seal what is safe to seal and flag anything that needs an electrician.
Insulating to the Right Depth
We blow or lay insulation to a consistent depth and mark it, whether the house dates from the 1920s or the 2020s.
Watching for Moisture
Older crawl spaces often sit on bare soil. We check for dampness and explain whether a vapor barrier or full encapsulation makes sense.
A Record You Can Keep
You get photos, final depths, and notes on what we sealed. For older homes, that record is useful for future work too.
Materials We Use in Concord Homes
We keep the product list short and proven. What matters more is matching each product to the part of the house it goes in. Your technician will explain the plan during your free visit.

Concord Homes and What They Need
The North and South Union Street Historic Districts were established in 1982 and are listed on the National Register. Edgewood became a local historic district in 1988, and the Logan Neighborhood was added to the National Register in late 2025. Homes in these areas often have little insulation in the walls and uneven coverage in the attic.
Concord also runs its own power company. Concord Electric Systems is one of 76 municipally owned electric utilities in North Carolina, with more than 34,000 accounts. That matters for rebates, because a city-electric customer and a Duke or EnergyUnited customer have different programs.
The housing mix is wide. Census data shows about 27% of Concord homes were built before 1980, including 17% before 1960, while 48% went up after 2000 (ACS 2024 1-year). North Carolina’s energy code lists R-38 for ceilings, R-15 for wood-frame walls, and R-19 for floors in climate zone 3.
Union Street Historic Homes
Plaster walls and old framing need a measured approach. We look for the gaps that matter and avoid damage to original finishes.
City Electric or Not?
Some Concord addresses are on the city system and some are not. EnergyUnited serves parts of Cabarrus County too. We check before discussing rebates.
Heat Pump Upgrades
Planning a new heat pump? Concord’s rebate covers the unit. We can tighten the house around it.
Closed Crawl Space Rules
North Carolina generally requires a permit to convert a vented crawl space to a closed one, with some exemptions. We cover that before work starts.
From Union Street’s older houses to newer Concord subdivisions, we check what your home actually needs. Request a free home energy audit and get a no-obligation plan.
Old Houses, Open Walls, and Air Leaks in Concord
Many homes built before modern codes were framed with open wall cavities that run from the crawl space to the attic. Air moves through those channels like a chimney. That is why an older Concord house can feel drafty even after new windows.
Attic first
Sealing the top of those wall cavities and insulating the attic floor usually gives the most improvement. Start with our attic insulation page.
Walls in older homes
Insulating existing walls takes care. Read what to expect when insulating walls in an old house and see our wall insulation service.
Below the floor
Cold floors in older homes often come from an open, damp crawl space. Crawl space insulation or encapsulation can help.
Climate zone 3A
Cabarrus County is in mixed-humid zone 3A. Humid summers make moisture control as important as winter warmth.

Reviews From Standard Customers
Concord Insulation FAQs
Can you insulate a historic home in Concord without damaging it?
Yes. We plan access around plaster, trim, and old framing, and we focus on the attic, crawl space, and accessible gaps first. Exterior changes in historic districts may need city review, so check with the Concord historic districts office.
Does Concord Electric Systems offer an insulation rebate?
The program we found is a $400 heat pump rebate for city electric customers. Ask the city about any other current programs.
My Concord home is on Duke Energy. What rebates apply?
Duke customers may qualify for Smart $aver rebates on attic insulation and air sealing. We are an authorized contractor and handle the paperwork. See insulation rebates.
Why do older Concord homes feel drafty?
Open wall cavities and unsealed attic floors let air move freely. Read why temperatures differ room to room.
Do I need a permit to encapsulate my crawl space?
Usually, when converting a vented crawl space to a closed one. The NC Office of State Fire Marshal describes the rule and its exemptions.
What climate zone is Concord in?
Cabarrus County is listed as mixed-humid zone 3A in the 2021 IECC county table.
Is insulation worth it in a newer Concord subdivision?
Often, yes. Builder-grade attics can settle or miss spots. Our attic insulation guide explains what to look for.
Do you work in every part of Concord?
Yes. We work throughout Concord, including ZIP codes 28025 and 28027. Call (704) 333-5151 to set up a free home energy analysis.
