An insulation company older than most Matthews neighborhoods: founded in 1945
Standard Insulating Company provides attic insulation, air sealing, wall and floor insulation, and crawl space insulation and encapsulation for Matthews homes.
Matthews has kept its small-town core while growing in every direction. We inspect each home on its own terms, measure what is there, and recommend only what will make a real difference.

Matthews Homes, Old and New
Matthews started as a farming settlement called Stumptown, later Fullwood. The railroad came through in 1874, a depot followed in 1875, and the town was incorporated in 1879. Ten downtown buildings, including the depot and a 1907 school, form a historic district listed on the National Register in 1996.
Some of the oldest buildings are on Trade Street. The Massey-Clark House, built around 1879, is a hall-and-parlor home at 232 North Trade Street that now houses the Matthews Heritage Museum, and the Heath & Reid General Store of 1888 is the town’s oldest commercial building. Homes from that era rarely had insulation when built.
Most Matthews homes, though, are newer, built as the town grew. They follow Mecklenburg County’s insulation targets: R-38 in attics, R-19 in floors over crawl spaces or garages, and R-15 in exterior wall cavities (or R-13 plus R-2.5 continuous).
Census figures show about 23% of Matthews homes date from the 1980s and 22% from the 1990s (ACS 2024 5-year). Houses that age are often due for an attic top-up.
Historic Trade Street Homes
Older houses near downtown often have little attic insulation and open crawl spaces. We plan carefully around original materials.
Suburban Attics
Homes from the town’s growth years often have settled or thin attic insulation. A measured check shows how far below R-38 yours is.
Electric Provider
EnergyUnited and Union Power serve parts of Mecklenburg County, and many homes use Duke. We confirm which applies.
Climate Zone 3A
Mecklenburg County is in mixed-humid zone 3A, so humidity control matters as much as heat.
Many Matthews homes date from the 1980s and 1990s, when attics got far less insulation. Request a free home energy audit and get a no-obligation plan for your home.
Why One Room in Your Matthews Home Is Always Different
Hot bedrooms, cold kitchens, and drafty hallways usually have the same root cause: uneven insulation and hidden air leaks. Where the attic insulation is thin or a wall opens into the attic, that room loses comfort first.
Find the weak spots
Read why temperatures differ from room to room to see what causes the imbalance.
Fix the attic
An even layer over well-sealed ceilings evens things out. See attic insulation.
Tackle the walls
Exterior and knee walls can be part of the problem. Our wall insulation service covers them.
Don’t forget the floor
Rooms over a crawl space can feel cold. See floor insulation options.
